You genuinely want to do something. You're excited about it. You think about it all the time.
But when it comes time to actually do it? You avoid it.
You procrastinate. You find other things to do. You suddenly need to reorganize your entire closet.
And you sit there thinking: "What exactly is wrong with me? I want this. Why can't I just do it?"
Let me tell you why.
Getting What You Want Is Terrifying
Here's the thing nobody tells you:
Getting what you want is scarier than not getting it.
Not in an obvious way. In a sneaky, subconscious way.
Because getting what you want means you have to deal with all the things that come with it.
And some part of your brain has decided those things are too dangerous to face.
When you procrastinate on something you want, you're not avoiding the thing itself.
You're avoiding what comes after you get it.
Let me break it down:
You're avoiding becoming someone who has it.
You're avoiding the responsibility that comes with it.
When you get what you want, you have to take care of it. Manage it. Be responsible for it.
You can't blame circumstances anymore. You can't play the victim.
You have to step up. And that's heavy.
So your brain makes you procrastinate to avoid that weight.
You're avoiding the possibility of losing it.
If you never get it, you can't lose it.
But if you get it? You have to live with the fear that it could be taken away.
That you could mess it up. That it could disappoint you. That it might not be enough.
So your brain keeps you in "wanting" mode because that's safer than "having" mode.
The more you want something, the scarier it is to actually get it.
Because the bigger the desire, the bigger the consequences of getting it.
The more your life will change. The more you'll have to become someone different. The more you'll have to let go of who you've been.
And your brain sees all of that as threat.
So it protects you. By making you avoid the very thing you want.
This is confusing because consciously, you want it.
You think about it. You dream about it. You plan for it.
But unconsciously, you're terrified of it.
And the unconscious always wins.
Your conscious mind can want something all day long. But if your unconscious mind sees it as a threat, you'll sabotage it every time.
That's why you can be genuinely excited about something and still not do it.
Your excitement is real. But so is your fear.
That's the difference between people who get what they want and people who just keep wanting it.
